Antique Victorian Pocket Watch Key Pendant with Amethyst and Chalcedony c.1850
A beautifully preserved mid-19th century pocket watch key, richly ornamented and dual-purposed as both a functional horological tool and a sentimental jewel. Crafted circa 1850, this key features a gold case that tests as 9ct on XRF analysis, finely worked into a petal-like motif surrounding a central gemstone.
One side is set with a richly coloured, faceted amethyst, while the reverse reveals a smooth, polished chalcedony panel—each stone offering a different visual mood, from vibrant transparency to quiet opacity. These double-sided jewels were often believed to hold symbolic or talismanic meaning, as well as adding visual charm when worn.
At the top, a swivel bail allows the key to rotate, making it especially wearable as a pendant. This clever mechanism enabled the key to be both practical and decorative, commonly suspended from a watch chain or lady’s chatelaine.
