Antique Silver Giardinetti Brooch with Colorful Paste Gemstones
A joyful flourish of colour and charm, this antique giardinetti brooch captures the spirit of 18th to early 20th-century romanticism. Crafted in silver and set with vibrant hand-cut paste stones, the design takes the form of a classical urn overflowing with a bouquet of stylised flowers. Each blossom is represented by a brightly coloured paste gem—emerald green, ruby red, amethyst, citrine, and peridot tones—while soft white pastes mimic delicate leaves, adding light and texture to the composition.
The gem set urn, in deep cobalt blue, is a striking focal point that anchors the piece with a touch of neoclassical elegance. The silver setting has developed a natural patina over time, lending depth and authenticity to the brooch's antique character.
The brooch is stamped Montell Baud (or Raud) and also bears a maker’s or assay mark within a diamond-shaped cartouche featuring the letter "S" and a four-legged animal, possibly indicating continental origin. An additional, unidentified mark is present on the C-clasp, adding to the intrigue and mystery of its provenance..
Giardinetti (Italian for "little garden") jewellery was popular in the 18th and 19th centuries, symbolising love, fidelity, and the fleeting beauty of nature. This brooch is a beautiful example of that tradition—a miniature garden you can wear.
Condition: Excellent antique condition with age-appropriate wear to the silver and stones. The paste gems remain vibrant, and the brooch clasp is secure.
Era: Early 20th Century
