Antique Silver and Rolled Gold Watch Chatelaine
An ornate antique watch chatelaine, beautifully fashioned in contrasting 900 silver and rolled gold, with a series of alternating elongated links creating an elegant two-tone design.
The silver links are richly engraved with scrolling foliate decoration and are stamped 900, while the warm rose-gold-toned links test as having a 14ct gold layer, consistent with rolled gold construction. The chatelaine terminates in an elaborate heraldic-style fob featuring a crowned helmet surrounded by deeply modelled scrolling acanthus decoration.
At its centre is a gold layer shield-shaped cartouche, finely hand engraved with an intertwined period monogram, possibly “JH” or “HJ”. Additional hallmarks are present but remain unidentified.
Originally intended for suspending a pocket watch, the decorative form made the chatelaine both a practical accessory and a piece of jewellery in its own right.
Condition: Good antique condition with surface wear and patina consistent with age.
