Victorian Garnet Carbuncle and Jet Mourning Ring in 12k Gold
This Victorian mourning ring encapsulates the deep sentimentality of the era. Fashioned in 12k gold, the ring is centered by a striking garnet carbuncle, its smooth, domed surface glowing with a rich, deep red hue—traditionally associated with love, devotion, and the eternal flame of memory. Surrounding the garnet is a halo of hand-cut jet, a material synonymous with mourning jewellery during the Victorian period, symbolising grief and solemn reflection. The ring is engraved on the reverse with inscription that reads, "To AC In Memory of LC".
This piece dates to the mid-to-late 19th century, a time when Queen Victoria’s prolonged mourning for Prince Albert (1861-1901) greatly influenced jewellery design. Black gemstones, particularly Whitby jet, became a standard in mourning adornments, allowing the wearer to honour their lost loved ones in a manner both respectful and elegant.
Condition: Very good antique condition, with some wear to the jet, adding to its authentic historical character. There is no chips or cracks on the centre garnet cab.
Garnet Size: ~ 8 x 4.5 mm
Jet Size: ~ 2 mm
