Victorian MIZPAH Ring in Sterling Silver with 9ct Gold Plating – AGG, Birmingham 1893
A heartfelt expression of love and separation, this Victorian MIZPAH ring is crafted in sterling silver, richly plated in 9ct gold and stamped with full English hallmarks for Birmingham, 1893. The ring bears the maker’s mark AGG, alongside the lion passant for sterling silver and the date letter ‘t’, confirming its late 19th-century origin.
The raised MIZPAH inscription—a Hebrew word meaning "watchtower"—was a popular motif in Victorian jewellery, often exchanged between loved ones during periods of parting. It references the Biblical verse: “The Lord watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another” (Genesis 31:49), symbolising enduring emotional bonds.
Set in a wide, softly domed band, the ring was originally plated in 9ct gold, much of which remains intact on the front and shoulders, giving a warm contrast to the underlying silver. As is typical for a piece of this age, the plating is faintly worn on the underside, revealing the silver beneath—a gentle reminder of its well-loved history.
Condition: Good antique condition with expected wear. The 9ct gold plating is largely intact on the face and shoulders but shows some wear on the reverse of the band. Hallmarks are clear and legible. Structurally sound and comfortable for wear.
Band width: 6.0mm tapered to 3.0mm
