Georgian 9ct Gold Glass Memorial Locket – Dated 1818
A poignant piece of Georgian mourning jewellery, this round glass photo locket is crafted in 9ct gold (tested) and engraved with a deeply personal dedication:
"Mrs Fredbout obt 22nd Oct 1818 AET 57" – noting the passing of Mrs Fredbout on October 22nd, 1818, at the age of 57.
The locket features a gold bezel with finely inscribed text encircling a bevelled glass panel, which protects a coiled lock of light hair—a common mourning tradition in the early 19th century. While the hair itself may be a later addition, the overall integrity and sentiment of the piece remain wholly intact.
The back of the locket is smoothly finished, and a grooved gold bail allows for easy wear on a chain or ribbon. This is a moving example of Georgian remembrance jewellery—elegant in design and intimate in meaning.
Condition: Some surface wear on the glass panel which can be buffed out, no chips on edges on the glass panels.
