Victorian 18ct Gold Mourning Pendant – "Remember Me" with Hairwork and Blue Silk
An exquisite and emotive example of mid-Victorian sentimental jewellery, this heart-shaped mourning pendant is crafted in high-carat gold, tested as 18ct. The front features a raised heart motif inscribed with the words "REMEMBER ME", surrounded by a delicate openwork border of floral and foliate embellishment. The detailing, from the finely engraved leaves to the applied gold flowers, reflects the meticulous handcraftsmanship characteristic of the era.
The reverse is equally striking, set with a vivid royal blue silk background beneath a heart-shaped glass, enclosing a beautifully arranged lock of entwined hair, secured with fine gold wire. This form of personal memento was a common and heartfelt mourning practice during the 19th century, when such jewellery served both as a tribute and a tangible link to a lost loved one.
Condition: Very good antique condition. The gold retains a rich patina, with only light wear to high points and fine detail. The hairwork is intact and well preserved beneath the glass cover. No chips or cracks to the glass noted. The bail is strong and original.
