Antique Victorian Fob Seal in Gold Case | “Silence” with Engraved Owl | c.1850
An exquisite mid-19th century gold-cased fob seal, beautifully cast and chased in high Victorian taste. The body features deeply sculpted repoussé detailing with acanthus leaf flourishes and foliate ornamentation, crowned by a robust scrolling handle designed to suspend from an Albert chain or chatelaine.
The base holds a finely cut and polished hexagonal-shaped rock crystal matrix, engraved with the word “Silence” in a crisp serif script. Just above the inscription is a meticulously intaglio-carved owl, a classical symbol of wisdom and quietude. The pairing of motif and message suggests this seal may have been a personal reminder or symbolic token—perhaps of discretion, contemplation, or philosophical reserve.
A superb collector’s piece or a meaningful pendant or charm when worn on a modern chain, this fob offers timeless charm paired with Victorian symbolism.
Condition: Presented in very good antique condition, with light surface wear consistent with age and use. The rock crystal is in excellent condition, free from chips or cracks, retaining crisp definition in the engraving.
