Georgian Enamel and Pearl Mourning Ring in 12K Gold
A remarkable example of early 19th-century mourning jewellery, this Georgian mourning ring is crafted in 12k gold and commemorates Samuel Allden, who passed away on the 8th of February, 1821, aged 77. This touching tribute is beautifully preserved, with its heartfelt inscription still crisp and fully legible on the underside of the panel.
The rectangular bezel is centered with a compartment of woven hair, protected beneath its original glazed crystal. This is framed by a surround of natural seed pearls, symbolic of tears, and enclosed within a fine black enamel border. The ring’s shoulders are intricately detailed with applied rope-twist and floral accents, typical of the late Georgian period.
Notably, the ring has been resized at some point in its history, yet the care taken to replicate the original decorative motif across the band is a testament to the reverence and skill devoted to its preservation. The black enamel remains completely intact, a rare feature in mourning jewellery of this age.
Condition: Excellent antique condition. All enamel is intact, pearls are securely set, and the hairwork is well-preserved under crystal. The ring has been professionally resized, with patterned detailing expertly matched to maintain the integrity of the original design.
