Victorian Pearl and Garnet Woven Hair Mourning Brooch in 12K Gold
A poignant and beautifully preserved example of Victorian mourning jewellery, this elegant brooch features a panel of finely woven brown hair, delicately encased beneath a clear rectangular glass cover. The hairwork is framed with a halo of creamy seed pearls, symbolising purity and remembrance, and then encircled by a second halo of deep red garnets, a stone traditionally associated with love, protection, and the endurance of memory.
Set in a warm-toned gold (tests as 12K), the brooch exemplifies the era’s sentimental craftsmanship and its unique blend of personal memorial with ornamental beauty. The reverse is fitted with a secure pin and an O-ring, cleverly attached where a security chain would once have been. This makes the piece wonderfully versatile — wearable both as a brooch or as a pendant suspended from a chain or ribbon.
Whether cherished as a memento, a collector’s piece, or worn as a dramatic historical jewel, this mourning brooch speaks to the love, loss, and emotional language of the 19th century.
Condition: Excellent antique condition. All garnets and pearls are present and secure. The glass panel is clear with no cracks, showcasing the hairwork beautifully. The pin mechanism is strong and functional. O-ring is securely fixed for optional pendant wear.
